Sanaz Labafzadeh
Designer. Educator.
“I see architecture like jazz. You improvise, you work together as a team, you organize everything, and at the end of this chaos, everything comes together beautifully and meaningfully orchestrated.”
Architectural staff member Sanaz Labafzadeh’s interests lie in connecting design to the surrounding natural and cultural environment. Her approach to architecture is informed by her background in engineering and art.
“My projects are client driven. It’s my job and primary responsibility to listen and to guide our clients as a team, because architecture is not a solo endeavor.”
With experience on educational and civic projects, with roles ranging from designer to job captain, Sanaz believes it is her duty to serve the public through her work. Listening to understand the needs of both client and user is where her design process begins. She prefers hand sketching during predesign and schematic design, contemplating what the project must achieve to create comfort for end users, while remaining responsive to the place. Site visits are a source of inspiration for Sanaz, where she brainstorms concepts and observes the interplay of light at different times of the day. As the design moves into production, she brings her commitment and technical competence to the process, offering her skills and perspective to best serve the team and project.
