Olympia Justice Center, Needs Assessment & Masterplan, City of Olympia
Location: Olympia, WA
Square Feet: 65,354 SF
Project Keywords: Justice, Public Safety
Project Description:
The existing City of Olympia Municipal Court and Jail was constructed in 1965. The City determined the facility was beyond its useful life and needed to be razed and reconstructed to meet the current and future needs of the growing Olympia community. The feasibility study considered the programming needs, feasibility of implementation, construction, project cost estimate, and schedule to construct a new Justice Center. The programs and services offered on the Campus include Municipal Court, Community Court, Jury Services, Probation Services, Municipal Jail, City Prosecution, Public Defense, Victim Assistance, and the DUI Victim Impact Panel. The proposed, purpose-built Justice Center is 65,354 SF in size and provides two Municipal Courtrooms, one Community Courtroom, a 74-bed municipal jail, and support spaces for all departments. The masterplan and design solutions provide thoughtful consideration to an adjacent Japanese Garden which is symbolic of the ties between Olympia and Yashiro, Japan, as well as the Plum Street Tiny House Village which provides stable, managed shelter for those experiencing homelessness in Olympia.
